Chapter Eleven

They left for San Francisco a little while later, but not before Calista had given each of the three dogs a

kiss on the head and a command to “Guard the house”. Every time he thought of it, Benito smiled over

the image of her doing that. God, she was adorable.

Her house was small, but he’d counted five soft, round dog beds scattered around the place. Hell, the

dachshunds probably slept twenty-three hours a day. And yet he could tell she’d be crushed if something

happened to one of them. When she loved, she loved with her entire heart.

His own heart quickened and he leaned forward, nuzzling against the side of her face, a pure jolt of

happiness bursting through him when he saw her hand entwined with Dante’s in the front seat of the Jeep.

Christ, he was hooked on her. He knew it had happened fast, but he wanted to tell her he loved her. He

wanted to hear her tell him the same thing. And he wanted to know Dante was included.

He cut a look over at his brother. I like them easy and I like to share them with you. End of story,

Benito. He’d be willing to bet Dante didn’t feel that way anymore. The real question was whether or not

he’d admit it.

They hit the city just as Dante’s cell phone rang. “Shit,” he said as soon as he saw the number. Within

seconds of taking the call his face was harsh and his voice clipped. “I’ve got to swing by the station.”

“What’s wrong?” Calista asked, her voice full of soft concern.

“Nothing for you to worry about.” Dante’s voice sounded cold and remote.

Benito grimaced when he saw hurt flash across Calista’s face. “Trouble with IA?” he guessed, knowing

he was right when a muscle twitched in Dante’s cheek.

“I’ll drop myself off at the station. You and Lista can keep the car,” Dante said, not answering Benito’s

question.

“Keep the car,” Benito countered. “Leave us in the Marina District. After we’re done checking out

Jessica’s upstairs neighbors, Calista and I can play tourist. You can call us when you’re done and we’ll

tell you where we are.”

Dante left them at Marina Green. “Is he going to be okay?” Calista asked as he drove away. “Do you

think this has to do with him being seen at Jessica’s apartment building with me yesterday?”

“He’ll be fine. Christ, I’ll be glad when this mess with the Mitchells is over. Maybe then he’ll be ready to

turn in the badge.” Benito hugged her to him and brushed a kiss against her forehead. “Especially now

that we’ve got you.”

Calista’s heart felt like it was going to explode in her chest at his words, at the meaning she wanted so

desperately to read into them. It felt so right with Benito…it was so easy to believe in forever and

happily-ever-after with him.

Crazy. Part of her knew it was crazy to think like that, but then again, she’d seen the magic of love

firsthand. She’d grown up hearing about how her father had swept her mother off her feet, marrying her

within months of rescuing her from a would-be rapist.
